The Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Research Center at Tehran University of Medical Sciences began as the Evidence-Based Medicine and Critical Thinking Group, conducting weekly EBM training sessions at Shariati Hospital. Under the leadership of Dr. Akbar Soltani, an endocrinologist and metabolism specialist, and with contributions from faculty members and medical students, the group was established within the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute at Shariati Hospital. Since winter 2002, the group has been dedicated to exploring various aspects of evidence-based medicine.
In 2005, the group expanded its focus to the theoretical underpinnings of the evidence-based medicine paradigm and the essential need for critical thinking. Weekly critical thinking sessions were launched at Shariati Hospital's Endocrinology Research Institute to examine related topics comprehensively.
The group also prioritized teaching scientific and critical writing for medical research articles. Moreover, with an emphasis on the prerequisites for evidence-based practice, the group delved into subjects such as the principles of clinical thinking and decision-making, clinical epidemiology, and statistics for physicians.
